BNNZ at the Mystery Creek Fieldays in 2026

We're making biochar in a live action demo each day of the event, using some of the heat from the Char-B-Q to cook sausages made from venison sourced from pest control operations in Central Plateau forestry. The biochar from each day's burn gets crushed and inoculated and put into sample bags. The timber is a mix of poplar and eucalyptus from the farm forestry block of committee member Simon Day. As part of our exhibitor site circularity and waste minimisation, used skewers, serviettes, and other biomass go into the Char-B-Q where they contribute their carbon and energetic value to the process.

This unique demonstration showcases how simple and achievable carbon removal can be, as well as how we get additional value from the production of biochar. All this together helped make BNNZ one of the finalists in the 2026 Fieldays Sustainability Awards, and we are honoured to be in the running.

June 7: The team is gearing up to make biochar and cook sausages once again. This time, we'll be giving away samples of the biochar made at the event so that people have a chance to try it out in the garden.
